Yet another OB appointment!

So we had an appointment with the OB today to follow up from the peri appointment yesterday. Turns out my OB was called in for an emergency C section, so he wasn't around to see me, so I saw his PA instead. The girls continue to look great on the ultrasound! They are both measuring pretty darn close now on this ultrasound machine as well, and I'm guessing that's because baby Brianna has flipped head down and it's harder to get accurate measurements on her. Their weights at the OB today were:

Baby A - AKA Olivia - 4 lbs 15 oz

Baby B - AKA Brianna - 4 lbs 12 oz

Either way the PA wasn't concerned about the girls at all and said they were doing great! Baby Olivia actually has her cord wrapped around her neck once, but the PA wasn't concerned at this point and says it's pretty common. Hopefully it doesn't stay that way though. . .I can imagine that could become problematic during delivery!

So, the babies are doing well. YAY. Momma though. . .well. . .I'm having a LOT of swelling - my feet, ankles, and legs - all huge and full of fluid. And I can't get it to go down. I have gained a ton of weight in the last month - nearly 25 lbs - and my blood pressure has gone up some too, so now they are concerned about preeclampsia. They are having me do some additional blood work in the morning and are having me do a 24 hour urine (yuck)! I go back to see them Thursday afternoon for a recheck and to discuss the results of the blood work and 24 hour urine test, and then I am scheduled to come in again on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. They are keeping a very close eye on me at this point.

So, we are keeping on a trucking here! 34 weeks 1 day, and overall doing pretty darn well! Hope you are doing well too!!!

OB and Perinatologist visits

Just a quick refresher - last Monday we ended up in L&D again because I was having contractions (again). They gave me two shots of terbutaline and sent me home with procardia and instructions to follow up with my OB on Thursday. I said I would post an update if anything "exciting" came out of our OB appointment on Thursday, and then I didn't post a thing! Well. . .

The OB does an ultrasound of the girls at every visit. I have been noticing for the last several visits that there is a pretty decent size difference between Baby A and Baby B. At the scan on Thursday this was confirmed -

Baby A - AKA - Baby Olivia - 4 lbs 12 oz (up from 4 lbs 10 oz 10 days prior)
Baby B - AKA - Baby Brianna - 5 lbs 10 oz (up from 5 lbs 4 oz 10 days prior)

As you can see, not only is there a decent size difference between the two babies, baby Olivia only grew 2 oz in 10 days. She should have grown at least 6 oz (like her sister did). She fell from being in the 70th percentile down to the 41st percentile. My OB decided to refer us to the perinatologist for a second opinion.

The perinatologist got us in for a second opinion crazy fast! First thing this morning in fact. I went in with a ton of questions and expecting bad news. I knew that if baby Olivia didn't pick up on the growth that they would consider delivering me early as she may be better able to thrive outside of momma's uterus instead of in it. I was fully prepared to talk to the peri about our options. BUT. . . according to his ultrasound machine and fancy equipment the girls are measuring very close. .

Baby A - AKA - Baby Olivia - 4 lbs 11 oz (42nd percentile)
Baby B - AKA -Baby Brianna - 4 lbs 12 oz (43rd percentile)

So, Baby Brianna flipped yesterday and is now head down too (yay!) and because of this they had a bit more difficult of a time getting accurate measurements on her, BUT, they were still sure that their weights were pretty darn close. I understand that ultrasound weights can be off at this point - up to a lb off even - but my OB personally does my ultrasounds with his own two hands, and on the same ultrasound machine each time. If there was that much of a size discrepancy, he didn't make it up! I'm so confused! I mean, I'm thrilled that the girls are doing well and are so close in weights, I just don't understand how it's possible that my OB could have been THAT far off!

We go back to the OB tomorrow evening, and he will do another u/s then. I'm curious to see what he has to say about the visit with the specialist and the difference in u/s measurements because I'm just perplexed! Oh, and my OB checked me on Thursday when I was in - 50% effaced still not dilated. Woo hoo=).

Now we are taking guesses as to when these little princesses will be entering the world. . .my guess? 35w2d. . .so 9 days from now. It probably isn't right - I haven't guessed anything correctly about this pregnancy yet! Why start now? LOL! The specialist today told me he expects me to go to 38 weeks. . .this was two weeks after my OB said that he was positive I wouldn't make it to 37 weeks. Who is right??? Want to guess?? I have guesses in for October 5th (me), October 7th (Aunt Chris), October 10th (Aunt Denise and Sarah Dee), and October 14th (my mom) so far=)

Anyway, I will update again after my OB appointment tomorrow. Hope you all are doing well!

33 Week Update and Pictures =)

Hello! It's been a little crazy around here for the last week, so I didn't have a chance to post belly pics or anything last week. That's okay though, because I have enough pictures this week to make up for it!

First, on Wednesday my grandma brought down the baby quilts that she made for the girls. I LOVE them!! Here are a couple of pictures of them=)

Si was out of town in Baltimore all weekend for a friend's wedding. I wasn't allowed to go for obvious reasons (I'm ginourmous and pregnant and the OB was worried that the change in cabin pressure on a plane could cause my water to break). I was a MESS while he was gone. Pregnancy hormones are nuts!!!

So Si got back Sunday and the girls were very patient and waited until about noon on Monday to start acting up. Contractions. . .about every 10 minutes. . .starting at noon. I called the OB and he told me to come on in to his office and they would do a NST (Non Stress Test) and make sure the babies were okay. We figured it would take an hour, two hours max. Well, we got to the OB's office and it turns out that the NST machine that they have does a cruddy job with twins, so we needed to go to L&D (labor and delivery) at the hospital instead to be monitored. Sigh. The only cruddy thing about going to the hospital to be checked out is it takes FOREVER! So we went, we were checked, and 6 hours later we were released to go home. We were having contractions of course, and my uterus is nice and irritable. They gave me two shots of terbutaline to reduce the contractions, checked my cervix (still thick, high, and closed - YAY), and sent me home with procardia to take at home to continue to attempt to keep the contractions at bay. We are supposed to go back in and see the OB on Thursday to make sure all is well, no cervical changes, etc.

We have another wedding this weekend, and Si is the best man (his brother's wedding), and we are hoping for a nice quiet uneventful weekend. Fingers crossed!! Stay put and stay quiet little ladies!

The only other thing I have is we were slacking last week and didn't take any belly pics, so I made sure that we took some tonight. Here are some pictures of 33 week preggo momma for your viewing pleasure=).
Here's a couple of side views. . .

Here is a bare belly pic - getting bigger by the second!

Here is a picture of my swollen ankles and feet! Yuck!

If I find out anything interesting at my OB appointment on Thursday I will make sure to post it! Otherwise. . .until next week. . .hope you have a great one!!! =)

Chunky Monkeys!!!

Hello!! We had our 32 week OB appointment today, complete with a growth scan (so we got new approximate weights on the girls). As usual, the girls are doing great! We are growing a couple of little chunky monkey babies in there! Here are the stats:

Baby A - AKA Baby Olivia - 4 lbs 10 oz - measuring 2 weeks ahead!

Baby B - AKA Baby Brianna - 5 lbs 4 oz - measuring 3 weeks ahead!

They are such over achievers!

The OB was quite impressed that the babies are doing so well. He said on average that babies at 32 weeks should weigh about 4 lbs, so with the girls being twins and weighing well over that they are really doing GREAT!

He also said that since I am now carrying 10 lbs of baby I need to really take it easy. He expects that my body won't be able to handle a whole lot more, and he thinks that I will most definitely have these babies on my own by 37 weeks at the absolute latest, if not before. And as it stands now, baby Olivia is still in prime position for a natural delivery, and baby Brianna is still crazy breech. Brianna's head is up under my ribs in the center (by my heart), her booty is over on the right side under my ribs, and her legs are spread apart and her head is in between them. It can't possibly be comfy! LOL. My OB still thinks that he can turn Brianna after Olivia is born. . .SO. . .we are going to proceed hoping for a natural birth! With lots of drugs of course =).

As for work, my OB is okay with me going in to the office for a couple of hours a couple of times a week. . .for now. He said at 34 weeks though, that HAS to stop. Period. So, now I know how he really feels! That's okay though, it is really really hard to get up and make the trek in to work now carrying 10 lbs of baby around. I can only imagine how much harder it is going to get carrying 11, 12, or 13 lbs of baby around!

Oh, and the only dissapointing news we got out of the whole visit. . . previously I had been cleared to attend Josh and Sylvia's wedding next weekend in Ord, NE because it was simply a road trip. Well, that was before we figured out that Ord is actually 4 hours away from Omaha, not 2.5. The OB is NOT okay with me being that far away, and thought that 4 hours in the car each way, plus the excitement from the wedding could easily put me into labor. So, sadly, I no longer get to attend. I'm pretty sad about that. It also means there will be two weeks in a row when Si will be out of town and I will be fending for myself with the pugs and kitties. Kind of hard to do being quite this pregnant! Bummer!

Anyway, it's getting late and I have to go to bed, but I wanted to make sure to update my blog before I forgot. Have a great rest of your week everyone!

31 week belly pics

Since I've already done a blog post this week with the contraction madness, this post will simply be the twin pregnant belly pics for 31 weeks. I'm getting bigger by the day! Enjoy!

The only other update I have is we have our final baby shower this weekend on Sunday with our pug and rescue people - woo hoo! Then we have our next ultrasound with growth scan on the girls on Tuesday (so we will get weights on the girls again). Otherwise, not much is going on. I hope it stays that way!! Have a great rest of your week!

Contractions??? Really???

Let me preface this by saying I've been having Braxton Hicks contractions since I was 17 weeks pregnant with these two little princesses. I'm used to them. . .and generally they don't hurt. . .they can be uncomfortable, but not painful. . .

Well. . .last night I was quite rudely awoken at 2 AM in pain! It felt like a Braxton Hicks contraction except with a decent amount of cramping and pain added in. Not just in my abdominal area either. . .down low (like menstrual cramps), up high (like the normal BH contractions for me), and some low back pain thrown in there for good measure. The contraction lasted about 65-75 seconds, and then slowly released. I was relieved. I got up to potty, then went back to sleep.

2:37 AM. . .AGAIN, I woke up to pain. . .the same thing. . .lasted about 65-75 seconds. I tried changing positions. I tried drinking water. I tried breathing techniques. Nada. Nothing helped.

This pattern had repeated itself 3 more times by 6 AM. At 6 I woke up Si and told him what was going on. He immediately thought I should call the OB's office. Of course the OB's office is closed (it's not only the weekend, but it's a holiday weekend). I thought about going directly to labor and delivery at the hospital. . .but I was SO tired at that point. All I wanted to do was go back to sleep and see if the contractions would go away. So that's exactly what we tried. We slept for another 3 hours. Luckily, the contractions got further apart and I only had one contraction between 6:30 AM and 10 AM. YAY. I continued to have contractions throughout the day, but they were totally irregular, and were further apart then they they had been in the middle of the night.

I kept arguing with myself during the day today whether or not I should call the OB's office. I knew that my OB was out of town not only this weekend, but all week, so it wouldn't be my OB giving me advice if I called. Finally at 4 PM I decided that I should just call the OB's office. I talked to the answering service and then a triage nurse who suggested that I go ahead and go into the L&D department at the hospital I was intending to deliver at just to make sure that I wasn't actually in labor. That's exactly what Si and I decided to do.

After being hooked up to the monitor and watching the heartbeats of the girls and the peaks on my uterine "activity", the L&D nurse confirmed that I was having contractions. The good news? That's apparently relatively normal at 31 weeks, especially with multiples, I wasn't having more than 4 an hour, and the girls seemed relatively unaffected by the contractions. The nurse spoke to the on call OB for my OB's practice, and she decided to order a fFN test (fetal fibronectin test - to determine my probability of going into full labor in the next two weeks), to have my cervix checked (to check for thinning, dilation, etc.), and to give me a shot of terbutaline to calm the muscles in my uterus and hopefully stop the contractions.

Thank you God. . .the fFN test was negative (meaning there is an incredibly low probability that I will go into labor and have these kiddos in the next two weeks), I am not dilated, my cervix is still thick and high, and the terbutaline slowed down my contractions after just one shot! YAY. We were at the hospital for about 3 hours, and were so happy that they let us leave with essentially a clean bill of health. I am supposed to call and go back in to see them if I start having more than 4 contractions in an hour at any point. The nurses also told me that each person seems to have a time of day that they have the most active contractions. . .for me it may end up being in the middle of the night/early morning hours. Lucky me! I can deal with it though (I will just be tired), just as long as these babies keep cooking for a while longer! So blessed to still have my babies healthy and inside of me!!

Hope you all are having a VERY uneventful weekend!

30 Weeks - update and belly pics=)

Hello! I hope you all are well=).

We don't have another OB appointment until September 14th (silly doctors and their vacations!), so I won't have another size and weight update on the girls for 2 more weeks. Whatever will I do?! Well, I will just update you as to what is going on with me then=).

The girls and I are doing well. I have been doing the finger pricking 5x a day as recommended for the monitoring of "gestational diabetes", and all but one of my readings so far has been totally within the normal range. I had one reading on Saturday morning that was at 124, and they wanted it at or below 120. It was after I had a pile of pancakes with syrup (YUM!) though, which is supposed to be a big no-no for GD moms. 124 wasn't really a "spike" in my blood sugar either. . .I would have expected closer to 200 or even higher for what I ate!

Really, I haven't changed my diet much at all, all I have done is cut out the Kool-Aid lemonade (which I am ADDICTED to!). Crystal light and the other brands just aren't the same thing. I DESPISE aspartamine, nutra sweet, splenda, and all other artificial sweeteners. If it's not real, I don't want it! So, needless to say I'm not drinking nearly as much fluid as I was previously, but I still think I'm drinking enough. I hope I am anyway! I will be so happy when I can have whatever sugar I want again. . .on the bright side, at least I can still have my cake and ice cream (I've had both with no spike in blood sugar - YAY). It would have been a very sad day if I would have had to cut those items out too!

What else is going on? Well, miss Sheila (my partner in crime from my last post) and her husband Andy are having their precious baby boy Adam tomorrow via C-section! I am SOOOO excited for them!! Miss Sheila, I know you are going to do GREAT!! And if you need anything at all, you call me, okay?! Happy early birthday baby Adam!!

I think that's all I have to report. We are still working away on the nursery, and we still need to figure out exactly what we want to do for the curtains, but everything else has at least been picked out, just not ordered. We have the cribs, crib sets, extra sheets, changing tables, changing table pads, some diapers, etc., we just don't have much for decorations yet for the nursery (wall hangings, hamper, crib skirts, wall plates, etc.). Really I need to just get on target.com and order the items that I want that match the crib set. . .unfortunately they don't sell the matching crib set accessories in the stores, so you actually have to order it off line and they have to send it to you. It kind of stinks because I like to actually see the stuff in person before I purchase it. Maybe that's why I've been slacking on ordering it? I should probably just suck it up get on the website and order what we need since we don't have much longer before the girls get here, huh? Now is NOT the time to procrastinate! LOL.

Okay, and here are my 30 week belly pics - enjoy!

Can you believe it is September already??? I expect these two little miracles to arrive sometime in October, so we have less than two months left of being pregnant. How AMAZING is that?! It's crazy to think about really. Anyway, thanks for reading, and have a great rest of your week!
